Because taking care of young people is hard work, our “Self Care for Youth-Serving Professionals” Spark Deck provides 52 fun ideas to help teachers, school staff, afterschool workers, camp counselors, and even parents stay healthy, feel more relaxed, and avoid burnout.
Pick a card at the beginning of the day or week, implement it, and notice how sometimes small changes can make a big difference.
Some examples from this deck:
- Keep a polished stone in your pocket. When you feel stressed, rub the stone for a few seconds to help you calm back down.
- Set an uplifting goal to make your day more calm, e.g. “Today I will see the positive side of everything,” or, “Today I will speak only in my ‘indoor’ voice.”
- Close your eyes and do a “Body Scan.” Starting with your toes, and working your way up to your head, notice the places where you are holding tension. Breath into those places and try to relax those muscles.
At the end of your week, check-in with friends or colleagues to talk about the activity you tried. How did it go? What did you learn? If it didn’t work this time, try it again tomorrow or next week. What could you change to make it work better?
