Because there is never enough time to do professional development with your staff, the “Try This Today” Spark Deck provides 52 fun ideas to build staff skills in classroom management, disguised learning, relationship-building, and other areas crucial to working with youth, while staff are on-the-job.
Designed to be used in afterschool and summer programs, the activities are appropriate for grades K-8. Hand a card out at the beginning of program time, and ask your staff to “Try This Today!”
Some examples from this deck:
- Have a “Quiet Contest” when walking in line or transitioning between activities. Give a silly “Noiseless Award” to the quietest person.
- At the end of the day, stand in a circle and invite each person to say “Thank you” to someone who helped them today.
- Go for a “Pattern Walk” and ask small teams to find as many shapes and patterns as they can. Teams can draw what they see while they’re out or when they get back.
At the end of program time, check-in with your staff to see if they were able to try out the activity. If they tried it, how did it go? What did they learn? If it didn’t work today, try it again tomorrow. What could they change to make it work better?
