Description

The ideas in this LGBTQ+ Youth Allyship Spark Deck were generated by youth and their adult allies in San Francisco, California, who were asked, “What can an ally do to support LGBTQ+ staff and students at your school or program?”

Ideas include:

  • Ask for gender-neutral restrooms at your school or center. You can organize a group to talk with staff about why this is important.
  • Having an LGBTQ+ friend does not make you LGBTQ+. Be friends with whomever you want to be friends with. We are all people and we are all worthy of friendship.
  • Don’t assume someone’s gender, instead, ask them privately (not in front of a group of people) what pronouns they use.
  • Advocate and plan classes, clubs, and assemblies at your school or program so that people can learn more about LGBTQ+ support, issues, and history.
  • Host a fundraiser that makes money for an organization that helps LGBTQ+ youth. Make the fundraiser event fun!
  • Let LGBTQ+ people know that they are safe when they are around you and that you will not let anyone hurt or tease them.

If you want to be an ally, pick a card and try out the suggestion. Share the cards with your friends so that you can all work together to create a safer, more inclusive space for everyone.
