Description

Because there is never enough time to do professional development with your staff, our “Positive Behavior Guidance” Spark Deck provides 52 fun ideas to build staff skills in creating a fun, caring, and peaceful program environment, while staff are on-the-job.

Designed to be used in afterschool and summer programs, the activities are appropriate for grades K-8.  Hand a card out at the beginning of program time, and ask your staff to implement one of these engaging activities that will help build a positive program environment and minimize negative youth interactions!

Some examples from this deck:

  • Give out “Smile Awards” (stickers, tickets, a hand-stamp) when you catch youth in your program smiling at each other
  • At the end of the day, save ten minutes to do a “Check Out.”  Ask youth to share one thing they did that was fun today or one thing they are looking forward to about tomorrow.
  • After asking for your group’s attention, patiently wait until everyone is quiet before giving instructions.  Do not talk over anyone.  Just wait, wait, wait.

At the end of program time, check-in with your staff to see if they were able to try out the activity.  If they tried it, how did it go?  What did they learn?  What did their group learn?  If it didn’t work today, try it again tomorrow.  What could they change to make it work better?
